Opera House Announces Gene A. Chesley Awards for the 2006-07 Season


Gene A. Chesley (1935-1981) was a highly regarded scenic designer, theatre historian and teacher. Chesley taught in the Dramatic Arts Department at the University of California, Davis, from 1963 until his death at the age of 46 in 1981. As a UCD faculty member, Chesley began an eleven-year project to identify and document extant historic theatres, opera houses and performance halls in all fifty states. He became a renowned authority on American theatres built between 1800 and 1914, and a strong advocate for the renovation and preservation of theatres as one of the founding members of the League of Historic American Theatres.

Woodland Opera House announces 2007 Chesley Awards and Elly Nominations
The Woodland Opera House held their 18th annual Gene A Chesley Awards for Theatrical Excellence on Saturday, August 11. The awards honor acting performances, outstanding volunteer contributions, and behind the scenes work.

The Chesleys are named in honor of the late Gene A. Chesley, long time professor of Theatre Design at UC Davis and one of the original moving forces behind the renovation of the Opera House. The awards are decided by the WOH Season Ticket Holders who have seen all five Mainstage plays. 

Acting Awards were given to Jeff Nauer Leading Actor Musical for Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof, Nancy Agee leading Actress Musical for Golde in Fiddler on the Roof, Patrick Murphy Leading Actor Play as Willie Loman in Death of  a Salesman. Lydia Venables Leading Actress Play as Linda in Death of  a Salesman, Eric Baldwin Supporting Actor Play as Biff in Death of  a Salesman, Jodi Serrano Supporting Actress Musical as Mrs. Potts in Beauty and the Beast, Casey Camacho Supporting Actor Musical as The Artful Dodger in Oliver!

Featured Appearance Awards went to Amy Vyvlecka as Babette in Beauty and the Beast and Bobby Grainger as LeFou in Beauty and the Beast.

Eva Sarry  received the choreography award  for Beauty on the Beast

Fiddler on the Roof was chosen Best Production of 2006-07.

The Tekkie of the Year Award went to long-time stage manager Lou Anderson who was the first recipient of the award in 1990.

Sue Sheldon was honored by the WOH Guild as top volunteer with over 450 hours logged.

City of Woodland representative Dan Gentry was given the Board of Trustees Award for outstanding service to the Board.

 ELLY AWARD NOMINATIONS

The Woodland Opera House 2006-07 Season received 25 nominations for the 2007 Elly Awards at the announcement party held by the Sacramento Area Regional Theatre Alliance on Sunday, August 12.

The Ellys  are named in honor of the late Eleanor McClatchy, publisher of the Sacramento Bee and long-time supporter of the arts in this region. Theatres from a seventy mile radius around Sacramento enter productions in several categories to be adjudicated by a group of volunteer judges.

Fiddler on the Roof:  Jeff Nauer Leading Actor Musical, Erik Daniells Music Direction, Jeff Kean Set Design.

Disney's Beauty and the Beast: Overall Production Musical, Bufffee Gillihan Leading Actress Musical, Jeff Kean and Angela Shellhammer Set Design.

The Box Car Children: Young People's Theatre Rob Blake Leading Actor, Drew Thomsen Leading Actor, Kimberley Casazza Leading Actress, Erin Solomon Leading Actress, Jeff Kean Set Design

The Magician's Nephew: Young People's Theatre, Iain Lee Leading Actor, Amy Vyvlecka Set Design, Jeff Kean Lighting Design.
The Elly Awards will be announced on September 23 at the Crest Theatre in Sacramento.
