Why worry about national or state debt when there are immediate problems with war, affordability, housing, jobs, homelessness, and more? Well, decisions by federal and state governments reach into all of these areas, and much more. In addition, federal support is responsible for, or makes possible, projects, jobs, and benefits at the local, state, and national levels. All of this needs to be paid for and is affected by government financing. So, debt payments or other problems with federal and state financing would have far reaching consequences for all of us. And please keep in mind the question of whether any organization that borrows one-quarter of what it finds necessary to spend every year is sustainable.
